STOCKPORT - prediction and result No Overall Control

Stockport is a safe Labour seat at the Parliamentary level but the borough includes Cheadle and Hazel Grove held by the Lib Dems at Westminster and the results in the wards that make up these two constituencies may be a pointer to next year’s general election.

The Lib Dems are the largest party but are defending 12 seats from 2010 and are unlikely to do so well this year.  Nevertheless 5 of these look safe for them and although the Conservatives challenge strongly in Bredbury Green and Romiley ward Cheadle and Gatley ward and in Hazel Grove and Labour in Bredbury and Woodley ward, Manor ward and Offerton ward, the other parties have not consistently beaten the Lib Dems in any of these in 2011 and 2012 but a lot will depend on whether they have the resources to put a full effort into all of them.

Only Davenport and Cale Green ward looks a definite gain for Labour from the Lib Dems while Labour should also gain Heatons North from the Conservatives.  With Independent councillors well entrenched in Heald Green, a continuation of NOC looks inevitable.
